Rickets is a bone disorder affecting the children. It occurs due to vitamin D or calcium deficiencies. This causes the bone to become brittle and bent. Children with medical condition that affects the absorption of nutrients in the intestine and children who do not get enough sunlight exposure are also at risk.

Symptoms

  • Pain/tenderness in the bones
  • Stunted growth
  • Bone fracture
  • Teeth deformities
  • Skeletal deformities like bowlegs/pigeon chest

Diagnosis

  • Diagnosis is based on physical examinations, blood test to check vitamin D and calcium levels and X-rays.

Treatment

  • Increase the intake of vitamin D and calcium by eating foods rich in vitamin D and calcium such as fish, liver, milk, eggs or by taking supplements.
  • Sunlight exposure must be increased in children with rickets.
