An anal fissure is a painful tear in the lining of anus, most commonly in the midline posteriorly. It most commonly occurs when passing hard/large stools. People with inflammatory bowel condition such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease may also develop this condition.

Symptoms

  • It includes sever pain while passing stools. It may be associated with minor bleeding and itching.
  • Long standing fissures may cause the adjacent skin to get thickened called as sentinel pile.

Diagnosis

  • It is based on symptoms and physical examination. Per rectal examination is usually avoided.

Treatment

  • The mainstay of treatment includes avoiding constipation with increased fluid intake, fiber rich food and laxatives.
  • Ointments can be used to relax the anal sphincter and to alleviate pain. Most anal fissure heals within a few weeks.
