It is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon which is the large tendon connecting calf muscle to the heel bone. The risk increases in the people of age 30 to 50 years, who exercise more often and who have recently engaged in increased physical activity. Some antibiotics also increase the risk.
The symptoms include heel pain, ankle pain, pain around the knee, stiff ankle. Later, tendon feels thick to touch
It is based on symptoms and clinical examinations. Ultrasound may be required to exclude tendon tear.
Treatment includes rest, simple pain relief medications, icepack and avoiding strenuous exercise.
Most people recover without any long-lasting effects.
