Myocardial infarction / heart attack is a medical emergency where a coronary artery (blood vessel of heart) is blocked and cannot supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen which causes damage to heart muscle.
Heart attacks are slightly more common in men and middle aged to older adults.
Important risk factors are diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, alcohol, smoking and obesity
Symptoms
- The most common symptom is the feeling of Pressure / tightness and pain in the chest which may spread to the left arm/jaw/back
Other symptoms are
- Shortness of breath
- Cold sweat
- Dizziness
- Fainting and nausea
Diagnosis
- It is made by ECG and blood markers to detect heart attack.
- The most conclusive test to check for blockages is by doing coronary angiography
Treatment
- Immediate treatment is to widen the artery with nitro glycerine.
- To remove the blockage, blood thinning medications can be given.
- Urgent cardiac catheterisation can be done to remove blockage.
