Cataract

It is the condition in which the normal lens of the eye becomes opaque.The vision becomes clouded, and it becomes difficult to do day to day activities. Most cataracts develop gradually

Symptoms

• Symptoms include clouded/blurred vision, sensitivity to light and glare,seeing halos around light, frequent change of glasses/contact lens
• Most cataracts develop due to ageing or eye injury
• Cataract can also occur due to other eye conditions and medical conditions like diabetes, Wilson’s disease, past eye surgery and steroid intake.
• Smoking, obesity, high BP, alcohol also act as risk factors
• Healthy lifestyle and regular checkups are necessary to delay the development of cataract.

Diagnosis

• Treatment includes removal of cataractous lens and replacing it with clear artificial lens
• If there is minimal cataract or no vision loss, no treatment is required.
