Tonsillitis is an inflammatory condition of the tonsils. It can be either caused by infection with bacteria or viruses
Children are at higher risk of developing tonsillitis
Symptoms
- Typical symptoms are a sore throat, swelling and pain when swallowing,headache, fever, swollen nodes.
- The lining of the throat may be red with yellow or white patches.
Diagnosis
- It is made by assessing the symptoms and examining the throat. A throat swab can be taken to test for specific causes of tonsillitis
Treatment
- Treatment depends on whether the cause is bacterial or viral. Anti-inflammatory medications are helpful in reducing pain and swelling.
- Surgical removal of tonsils may be required if the infections are recurrent.
